22.5×22.5cmという小さな正方形の画面のなかに、深尾は宇宙的なダイナミズムと人間存在の痕跡を凝縮させている。本作は単なる「無題」ではなく、不可視のものを可視化するための装置そのものなのだ。
Ryoko Fukao’s works transcend the conventions of pictorial practice, unveiling the silent breath of the universe that lies between matter and spirit, chance and necessity, stillness and movement. Employing traditional materials such as washi paper, wax, and sumi ink, Fukao forgoes the mediating brush; instead, her fingers directly engage with the surface. This tactile act inscribes unique layers into the composition, traces that evoke sedimented time and the echoes of natural phenomena, resonating with the viewer’s inner perception.
Her method recalls the legacies of Art Informel and Abstract Expressionism, while simultaneously embodying the distinctly Japanese sensibilities of ma (interval) and wabi-sabi (ephemeral beauty). By conceiving the pictorial plane as stratified layers, she listens to the voice of the material itself and bridges it to a spiritual dimension. The work thus becomes not merely an object but a site of emergence, akin to a ritual that renders invisible energies and the residues of memory perceptible.
Within the intimate square format of Untitled (2017), Fukao condenses both cosmic vastness and the fragility of human existence. Behind its quiet surface lies a profound energy, calling us to experience the very essence of being.
