Where sculpture in stone or metal involves carving, pounding, or molding to alter the material, Tsuji’s approach to wood is different. He honors the inherent rhythm and breath of the material, creating spaces that arise directly from its natural qualities. Just as a flower stem, when placed into a kenzan, instinctively shapes the space around it, Tsuji’s wooden sculptures stand by following the voice of the material itself. This process, however, is far from tranquil. Tsuji confronts the wood with cries, groans, and struggle—bridging the gap between the form he seeks and the form the wood insists upon. The works, intentionally left with splinters, cracks, and rough edges, remain unfinished. Breathing in their incompleteness, they continue to transform, as if responding to the artist’s persistent questioning throughout the exhibition. Tsuji’s sculptures visualize the “living lines” innate to wood while simultaneously awakening a hidden sensitivity in the viewer. They embody both rawness and delicacy, the richness of what remains unfinished. In this tension, his works reveal themselves as traces of dialogue—between nature and human, material and spirit.
